How to make Claude work every morning without you
Use a scheduled task. You tell Claude the job and when to run it, for example every weekday at 8am, and it runs on its own. Anthropic's help page says scheduled tasks are on all paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Not on the free plan.
Your laptop does not have to stay on for most jobs. Anthropic says tasks run "even when your computer is asleep or the Claude Desktop app is closed." The exception: a task that needs files or apps on your laptop runs only on your laptop. Checked on 24 October 2026.
The difference between a chat and an employee is the timer.
A chat waits for you. You open it, type, and wait. An employee turns up at 9am whether you remember or not. Until your AI helper runs on its own, it is still a chat that you have to start. This article shows how to put it on a timer, which plan you need, and what it can and cannot do while you sleep.
What is a scheduled task in Claude?
A scheduled task is a job you save with a time. Each time comes round, Claude runs the job with the instructions you saved. When I checked Anthropic's help page, you could choose hourly, daily, weekly, weekdays only, or manual runs.
A good example is a Morning Brief: every weekday at 8am, read my Gmail and Google Calendar, and write a short note on what came in, what needs a reply, and what is on today.
Which Claude plan do you need?
A paid plan. Anthropic's help page says "Scheduled tasks are available on all paid plans (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise)." Claude Pro, the cheapest, was USD 20 a month billed monthly, or USD 17 a month paid yearly, on claude.com/pricing on 24 October 2026. Indian users are billed in rupees, so check the price in your account.
Does my laptop need to stay on?
This is the question everyone asks, so here is the full answer from Anthropic's help page, as of 24 October 2026:
- Most tasks run without your laptop. Tasks run remotely, on Anthropic's side, by default. The page says they run "even when your computer is asleep or the Claude Desktop app is closed."
- Tasks that need your laptop run on your laptop. The page says: "If a scheduled task requires local files or apps, it will only run locally." So if the job reads a folder on your laptop, the laptop must be on and awake at that time, with the Claude app able to run.
- Older tasks. On Pro and Max, tasks made before 6 October 2026 that ran on your computer keep running there.
So a Morning Brief that uses only the Gmail and Calendar connectors does not need your laptop on. A job that sorts files in a folder on your laptop does.
How do you set up a scheduled task?
When I checked, Anthropic described two ways.
From a normal chat. Describe the task and how often it should run. Claude asks a few questions, shows you the name, schedule and instructions it plans to save, and you select "Schedule".
From Cowork. Open "Scheduled" in the left sidebar, click "New task", and choose "Create with Claude" or "Set up manually". The manual way asks for a name, the instructions, how much it should ask before acting, how often to run, and optionally a model and a working folder.
Menus change often. If a button is not where I said, ask Claude: "How do I schedule a task in this app?"
What should the task's instructions say?
Write it as if nobody will be there to answer questions, because nobody will. Include:
- The job. "Read my Gmail from the last 24 hours and today's calendar."
- The result. "Write a brief: urgent replies first, then today's meetings, then anything I should prepare. No more than ten lines."
- Your rules. "Anything from these three clients is urgent."
- The never do list. "Never send, delete or move anything. If unsure, say so."
- Your skill, if you made one. Name it in the instructions, then check the first run to see it was used.
Which jobs are good for a timer?
- A morning brief of email and calendar.
- A Friday note of what happened this week, from your email.
- A list of meetings tomorrow, with what to prepare for each.
- A weekly list of emails you have not replied to.
All of these only read. That is on purpose. A job that runs while you are away should not be able to do damage while you are away.
What should you check before you trust the timer?
Run the job by hand first, until it passes the test in how to test an AI before you trust it. Then turn on the schedule and read every result for the first week. If a run fails or gives a strange result, fix the instructions before the next morning.
Also choose how much it may do without asking. When you set up a task manually in Cowork, there is an approval setting. Keep it so that Claude asks before it acts, at least at the start.
What are the limits of scheduled tasks?
- Paid plans only. Not on the free plan, as of 24 October 2026.
- Local jobs need your laptop. Anything that reads your laptop's files runs only there.
- Nobody is watching the run. If the job is unclear, it guesses. Clear instructions matter more here than anywhere.
- Usage limits still apply. Paid plans have usage limits. Start with one task a day, not many tasks every hour.
- Things change. This feature changed on 6 October 2026. Check Anthropic's help page on scheduled tasks for the current rules.

Questions people ask about running Claude every morning
Can Claude run a task automatically every day?
Yes. Scheduled tasks let you save a job with a time, such as every weekday at 8am. Anthropic says they are available on all paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
Do I have to keep my laptop on for Claude scheduled tasks?
Not for most tasks. Anthropic says they run even when your computer is asleep or the Claude Desktop app is closed. A task that needs local files or apps runs only on your computer, so the laptop must be on for that one. Checked on 24 October 2026.
Are scheduled tasks on the free Claude plan?
No. As of 24 October 2026, Anthropic lists them on paid plans only. Claude Pro was about USD 20 a month billed monthly.
Can a scheduled task send emails?
Not through Claude's Gmail connector, which Anthropic says can read and search email but cannot create, send or change it. For a job that runs while you are away, reading only is the safe choice.
How often can a scheduled task run?
When checked on 24 October 2026, Anthropic listed hourly, daily, weekly, weekdays only, and manual runs.
